On the third day of the Eastern Economic Forum the Znanie Society lecture hall frames a conversation on Russia's foreign-policy priorities, the country's role in the contemporary world, diplomacy and truth. Lavrov is introduced as the guest of the session.

This is the third day of the Eastern Economic Forum, and we are glad to welcome you here, in the lecture hall of the Russian Znanie Society.

Today we will talk about the priorities of Russia's foreign policy, about the role of our country in the contemporary world, about diplomacy, about truth.

Lavrov has attended all eleven Eastern Economic Forums and sees the event growing in participants and topics. Youth matters especially: Eurasia is the fastest-growing, richest and most populated continent, home to several millennial civilizations — Russian multinational, Indian, Chinese, Ottoman, Persian and others — that keep their identity.

Without a sense of belonging to what ancestors defended, national belonging is hard to keep; openness to the world has remained a distinctive trait from pre-imperial times through Peter, the Soviet Union and contemporary Russia.

Russia builds multilateral Eurasian cooperation on equality, mutual benefit and honest dialogue — SCO (after the Bishkek summit), the EAEU and ASEAN — with memoranda among secretaries-general to harmonise programmes. Contacts continue with the Asia Cooperation Dialogue, BRICS, and UNESCAP. Putin named this the Greater Eurasian Partnership a decade ago at the first Russia–ASEAN summit; it is now fixed in the March 2023 Foreign Policy Concept, open to all Eurasian states.

God-given continental advantages were long held back by Western policy that now tries even more fiercely to split Eurasia — walls and hundred-metre ditches on EU borders with Russia. NATO and EU governments need an enemy; if the artificial image of Russia vanished, most of those governments would be swept away by voters. Russia builds no walls; Europe closed itself off. There will be no begging for sanctions relief.

For more than five hundred years Europe was the main source of humanity's disasters — two world wars and today's sanctions binge to defend hegemony. Europe never lived by its own means: colonialism, slavery, then sanctions for Russia's defence of people oppressed by the Nazi regime in Ukraine. Lavrov was stunned when Chancellor Merz said he would make Germany Europe's main military power again — if Merz does not grasp what "again" means, that is dangerous for Europe.

Russia is a strategic partner of ASEAN; the East Asia Summit rests on inclusivity and equal rights. The West dislikes consensus formats because it still wants to dictate. Diplomacy is about agreeing — Lavrov calls it the oldest profession, since even the one traditionally so named required agreement first — while the West has substituted sanctions for diplomacy.

The West does not like structures where it must be part of a consensus.

Asked why NATO enters Southeast and Northeast Asia when the Washington Treaty is about defending members' territories, Stoltenberg answered that threats to those territories now come from the Taiwan Strait and Southeast Asia. An American congressional draft for an "Indo-Pacific Treaty Organization" would reproduce NATO mentality in the region. The US–Japan–ROK triangle also grows military and potential nuclear cooperation despite Trump's cuts to some exercises.

NATO, the EU and the OSCE are fading as frameworks; universal consensus formats are Russia's alternative — slower to agree, but more durable than ultimatums.

If the initiative President Putin advanced on Eurasian security is realised, it will give ordinary people a sense of calm, security and comfort.

Energy prices near €800 after abandoning Russian gas and swallowing Nord Stream sabotage complete the self-inflicted wound; industry flees to the US.

At Anchorage on 15 August 2025 Putin described Zelensky's regime; Trump startled when told the church was banned and asked Rubio, who confirmed — yet Washington never signalled Kyiv to restore language or church.

Rights to language and religion cannot be conditioned on negotiations. UN Charter Article 1 requires respect regardless of race, sex, language and religion; Ukraine's constitution still guarantees Russian minority rights while laws contradict both. Westerners say these issues will enter a talks agenda — Lavrov rejects that.

Neo-Nazi radicals captured the post-Soviet Ukraine. Trump speaks of realities on the ground; Europe insists on 1991 borders — unreal for any serious politician.

Russia recognised Ukraine on its independence declaration — neutral, non-bloc, non-nuclear. Zelensky mourns giving up nukes; non-bloc status is forgotten; NATO membership is demanded. Trump said forget NATO; Secretary General Rutte still calls Ukraine a natural future NATO member. The EU has become an openly aggressive anti-Russian military adjunct of NATO.

Украина будет независимой, нейтральной, внеблоковой безядерной державой. Все вот эти принципы уже перечёркнуты.

Ukraine would be an independent, neutral, non-bloc, non-nuclear power. All these principles have already been crossed out.

The European Union … has turned into an openly aggressive anti-Russian military bloc — a prop for NATO.

Asked how he finds time for poetry in a 24/7 aggressive environment, Lavrov says images that want paper have been with him since sixteen. He wrote words and music for the MGIMO hymn without reading notation — sung and later performed; it sounds every 1 September.

From a young age, from sixteen, certain images formed in me that fell into rhyme.

Existentially, recognising that all are given life with equal rights is a base for a decent person. Upbringing starts in the family. After Western-leaning Bologna experiments, Russia is returning to the viable core of the Soviet school — without idealising every tradition — so students can take in information and art and draw their own conclusions. He will not pick one book over another among Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Pushkin and Gogol; thanks go first to his mother.

Many now study Chinese. English will keep global utility — colonial legacy and convenience, official in India among many peoples. French plays a similar role in Africa. Russian as inter-ethnic language (official in Kyrgyzstan) is a great asset. Unlike colonial empires, peoples of Russia and the USSR were never colonial provinces.

At the June 2021 Geneva meeting Biden, without notes, told Putin Americans are a migrant melting-pot nation while Russia grew roots on its land and spread statehood while preserving languages, cultures and religions of joined peoples — a greatest achievement, hard to govern as a nuclear state. He wished Putin health and denied interest in Russia's destabilisation. Lavrov treats that as rare Western recognition of Russian interests.

Ahead of Duma elections, with Lavrov on United Russia's top five, the West openly tries to undermine society via émigré structures and diplomatic provocations. Rubio said at NATO/G7 that deep strikes into Russia bring Moscow closer to talks. Lavrov asked him in Manila how one can openly encourage terrorism; Rubio framed it as wanting talks sooner — though talks already began at Anchorage a year earlier.

Americans built initiatives from realities on the ground, including referendums fixed in Russia's constitution; Putin accepted the US package. A merchant handshake is sacred in Russian character; the West treated oral no-NATO-expansion promises and even the 1999 OSCE written non-domination pledge as non-binding. Europe and Zelensky then pulled Trump away from Alaska.

For nearly five years Russia asks the UN for the victim list; Guterres cites confidential relatives who never clamoured. European visitors are still taken to Bucha. Lavrov will raise it again at the UNGA and challenges UN correspondents' investigative pride.

The West now pushes an immediate stop along the contact line, then "stabilisation forces" on remaining Ukrainian territory without recognising Crimea, Donbass or Novorossiya — freezing a ban on the Russian language (unique worldwide for an official UN language) and canonical religion. That would materialise a NATO threat on Russia's borders and betray ancestors who defeated Nazism in 1945. The nation is used to sacrificing material comfort for that memory.

They want to preserve and eternalise the Nazi regime that banned the Russian language in all spheres.

Kyiv's strikes on marketplaces, refineries and infrastructure, and Zelensky's call to ground Russian civil aviation where Ukrainian combat drones fly, openly aim to make society revolt. Rubio's deep-strike logic fits that design. Russia was accommodating at Anchorage; Americans crawled back from their own proposal.
