He stresses that professional diplomacy requires both teamwork and the courage to act independently when circumstances demand it.

Working through a night session at Albright's residence — smoking was forbidden under New York law — he prevented Washington from pushing through a condemnatory draft; a consensus text was adopted, and Cuban friends still thank him.

Western analysts now concede there was no sense in NATO expansion or keeping Russia on the sidelines, yet even in the 2000s Moscow did not abandon efforts to develop Western cooperation.

On Venezuela, North Korea, Iran, India or Saudi Arabia, Washington raises human rights; on Ukraine, Lavrov notes, human rights are never mentioned despite laws uniquely banning an official UN language in all spheres. The 1970 Declaration on Friendly Relations linked territorial integrity to governments representing entire populations. The Secretary-General remains silent; the Secretariat is privatised by NATO states in violation of Charter impartiality requirements.

Russia simultaneously deepened ties with China, India, Iran, Arab states and Latin America in Primakov's multipolar spirit without turning away from the West.

In January 2022 Lavrov met Blinken, who said security architecture was not Russia's business and offered only a promise to limit medium-range missiles placed on Ukraine. The President hoped until February that arrangements before February 2022 would never return, yet gave chances to the end — sit at the table and agree security for Ukraine without undermining Russia's security.

He describes the naked logic: 'they tell us no and we would agree?' — not common sense. Trump now invokes common sense against pouring hundreds of billions into a losing Ukrainian regime; then, Lavrov argues, ideological zeal and pride drove the tragedy the West brought upon itself.

Precisely that model should apply to Russia-US relations. When Trump called Putin, no bilateral preparation preceded talks; teams flew to Istanbul within days. Normal conversation was received as a sensation after Biden's tenure had conditioned world opinion to treat dialogue as extraordinary — yet interests will never fully coincide, and responsible powers must prevent divergence from becoming confrontation.

Russian-language aggression exceeds anything inflicted on any language globally. For nearly three years Lavrov has publicly asked the UN to establish Bucha facts — requesting publication of names of bodies shown on BBC two days after Russian forces left; neither the UN Human Rights Office nor journalists respond. Georgia and Ukraine were US projects from the 2008 Bucharest NATO summit; Lavrov practices moral honest diplomacy — sharper since 2008 but always saying what he thinks, as Putin does, while Chinese diplomacy never closes dialogue with neighbours as the West did to Russia. Serbia-Kosovo resolutions from 1999 remain unfulfilled after 26 years — diplomacy, like life, is not simple but one must live and work.
