Meeting with Russia Today Journalists

1. RT's Mission — Breaking the Anglo-Saxon Media Monopoly
Putin frames the founding of Russia Today in 2005 as a deliberate act of information sovereignty: the introduction of a new player onto the global information scene capable of reporting objectively about Russia and of challenging the dominance the Western outlets hold over global information flows. He is careful to distinguish independence from advocacy — the channel was never intended as an apologist mouthpiece for Russian policy but as a genuine alternative voice, even as he candidly acknowledges that state financing naturally carries the official position with it. The persuasive force here lies in reframing a state-funded broadcaster not as propaganda but as pluralism: the correction of an imbalance in which a single bloc of media had shaped the world's perception of events unchallenged.
it will try to break the Anglo-Saxon media monopoly on global information flows
we never conceived this channel Russia Today as a form of apologetics for Russian policy
2. Snowden and State Surveillance
On the Snowden disclosures Putin adopts a tone of measured realism: the revelations disclosed nothing that informed observers did not already understand. Electronic intelligence monitoring of communications is, in his account, a globally practised and globally demanded instrument in the struggle against terrorism. The genuinely important question, he argues, is not whether such capabilities exist but whether they remain under the control of society and the law. He points to Russian practice as the standard — surveillance is legitimate only within legal bounds, and a telephone conversation cannot lawfully be intercepted without a court warrant. The rhetorical move is to shift the debate away from scandal toward legality and accountability, positioning Russia as observant of proper legal procedure.
He didn't say anything that no one already knew
you cannot simply tap a phone conversation without the appropriate court warrant
3. Putin's Divorce and Its Religious Dimension
Asked about the religious aspect of his divorce, Putin answers directly and without evasion, presenting the decision as one of honesty. He and Lyudmila concluded that speaking plainly about their real circumstances was the more proper course than concealment. On the specific religious question he is categorical: there is no religious dimension to dissolve, because the marriage was never solemnised in church. The framing turns a personal matter into a demonstration of forthrightness — the choice to be open rather than to hide is presented as itself the ethically correct behaviour.
to speak plainly and honestly is a far more proper way to behave than to hide something
it doesn't exist, because we were never married in church
4. Syria — Against Outside Intervention
Responding to a correspondent's account of a radicalising and embittered Syrian population, Putin rejects the premise that Russia is Assad's advocate and reframes Russia's position as principled caution against repeating the Libyan scenario, where outside intervention produced resource wars and enduring chaos. He stresses that the whole region has been destabilised and points to the contradiction of Western support for groups such as al-Nusra, a US-designated terrorist organisation. His central argument is one of sequence and sensitivity: nothing can be undertaken without regard for the region's history, traditions and religious character, and above all political arrangements must precede rather than follow any change of power. The persuasive thrust is that intervention driven by ideology rather than local reality guarantees catastrophe.
nothing can be done without regard for the history, traditions and religious features of this region. Above all, one must not intervene from outside
first drive everyone out, and then plunge the whole country into chaos
5. Europe's Crisis vs Russia's Economic Health
On the wave of European youth protesting austerity, Putin distinguishes sharply between prescriptions that suit Europe and those that would harm Russia, on the grounds that the two economies are fundamentally different. He marshals concrete figures to make the contrast vivid: Russia's low external debt of 2.5 per cent, a balanced budget and unemployment of 5.5 per cent set against Europe's debt levels approaching 90 per cent and youth unemployment nearing 60 per cent. He adds a structural point of sovereignty — Russia possesses no printing press for reserve currencies, and therefore must restrain spending and keep interest rates high to avoid inflating bubbles. The argument presents Russian macroeconomic discipline as prudent and self-reliant, contrasting it with a Western model dependent on the privilege of issuing reserve money.
For them it's right, but for us it's not, it's wrong. We have different economies
We don't have a printing press for reserve currencies, but they do
6. Multiculturalism and Immigration
Putin contends that Europe's and America's integration difficulties are sharper because their migrants arrive from wholly foreign cultures and often fail for years to assimilate or even learn the language. Russia's task, by contrast, is easier, since most of its migrants come from former Soviet republics and share a common language, mentality and historical memory. Yet he sets a firm condition: newcomers are obliged to respect Russian laws, traditions and culture, and this requires targeted effort such as language and history instruction. Underlying the discussion is a critique of the one-size-fits-all imposition of a single model — the attempt to comb an entire diverse region under the same standard that is labelled democracy — which he treats as the root of the West's own failures.
to comb this whole region with the same comb that someone calls democracy
they came to another country and are obliged to observe our traditions, our laws
7. Citizenship Policy and Protecting Native Citizens
Pressed by two immigrant correspondents on the slowness and circularity of Russia's citizenship procedures, Putin concedes the point plainly: the policy is too rigid and must become more flexible in order to attract qualified people, and he cites Canada as a model worth studying. At the same time he anchors the priority firmly in the interests of Russia's indigenous peoples, observing that 85 per cent of the population identify as Russian. The balance he strikes is between openness to talent and a duty of care toward the native population — reform of the process is welcome, but never at the expense of safeguarding those who form the country's core.
We must act very carefully in order to safeguard the interests of the indigenous residents of the Russian Federation
our policy in the migration sphere must be more flexible
8. Georgia — Reconciliation Without Reversal
On Georgia Putin assigns responsibility for the 2008 war to Saakashvili's mistake, made despite repeated Russian warnings against bloodshed, and asserts that any objective observer understands Russia was not at fault in a centuries-old ethnic conflict. He warmly notes the new Georgian government's overtures — participation in the Olympics, access for Georgian goods — and expresses a genuine wish for the full restoration of relations between two very close peoples. But he draws one immovable line: recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is irreversible, a step backward he cannot even conceive. Visa-free travel, meanwhile, is made conditional on cooperation against terrorism, recalling that militants once infiltrated toward Sochi from Georgian territory. The message combines fraternal openness with a non-negotiable political fact.
I cannot imagine a step backwards, I simply cannot imagine it
We are very close peoples with Georgia
9. Drones and Regulating New Weapons
Addressing US drone strikes and their civilian casualties, Putin expresses doubt that an outright ban is achievable — he compares the technology to gunpowder and to nuclear weapons, neither of which could be contained once created — but insists that their use can and must be brought under control and subordinated to rules that minimise accidental deaths. He then widens the frame to a broader arms-control concern: conventionally-armed strategic ballistic missiles and low-yield nuclear weapons that blur the thresholds between conventional and nuclear war and thereby create grave dangers. His conclusion points toward joint work under international law as the only viable path, presenting Russia as the advocate of managed, rules-based restraint over technologies the West deploys without adequate limits.
I doubt everything can be banned, but it certainly can and must be placed under control and subjected to certain rules
10. Legitimate Opposition and the Kudrin Question
Putin sets out his standard for a healthy opposition: any opposition is good, right and useful so long as it operates within the law and pursues change through democratic means; those who step outside the law must be returned to the legal field — a principle he says applies equally in the United States, though Russia is uniquely criticised for enforcing it, which he treats as a double standard. He affirms the value of a thinking, nationally-oriented opposition. On Aleksei Kudrin he notes their agreement on matters of principle, and turns a sharp critique on the opposition for privately endorsing painful but necessary reforms — raising the pension age, cutting social spending — while refusing to say so openly before the public. The framing casts the systemic opposition as constructive and the non-systemic as either lawless or dishonest.
any opposition is good, right and useful if it acts within the law
a thinking, nationally-oriented opposition is, of course, very much in demand
11. Iran — Rights, Concerns, and US Instrumentalisation
On Iran Putin affirms without qualification the country's right to a peaceful nuclear programme free from discrimination, stating there is no evidence that Iran violates the non-proliferation regime. He balances this with a clear reservation — Iranian threats against Israel's very existence are unacceptable. His most analytical point is a symmetry: Iran skilfully exploits confrontation with the United States for domestic consolidation, just as Washington, having lost its Soviet adversary, requires an external threat to justify its role as protector of the Western allies. The presence of an enemy, he observes, unites a society. The argument advances the multipolar theme by exposing the instrumental, self-serving logic of confrontation on both sides and defending Iran's formal legal rights against selective pressure.
Iran has the right to a peaceful nuclear programme, and it cannot be discriminated against
there is an enemy — it unites society
12. Fundamental Russia–US Differences and the "Empire" Trap
Putin locates the core of Russia–US differences not in ideology, which he says no longer divides them, but in culture: American self-consciousness rests on the individualist idea, Russian self-consciousness on the collectivist one. He develops a pointed historical narrative — America founded as a democracy yet born of unprecedented ethnic cleansing and slavery — and contrasts moral choices, doubting Stalin would have used the atomic bomb in 1945 while the United States dropped it on a non-nuclear and already defeated Japan. His central diagnosis is structural: since the collapse of the USSR the United States has felt itself an empire and sole leader, and an empire cannot permit itself any display of weakness or any compromise on equal terms. Yet he closes on a note of hope, recalling that the two nations found common cause in both World Wars and can do so again.
At the core of American self-consciousness lies the individualist idea. At the core of the Russian — the collectivist one
the States began to feel themselves an empire, and an empire cannot allow itself any display of weakness
13. A Multipolar Information World (Closing)
The editors close the meeting by returning to RT's founding purpose, distilled into a single principle: no single actor should dominate the world, and this applies to the information sphere as much as to politics. They illustrate the point with a concrete asymmetry — where every channel reports a downed NATO drone, someone must also report the NATO shell that killed a family of thirteen the same day. Putin endorses the sentiment. The closing crystallises the whole conversation into its governing idea: multipolarity as an information as well as a geopolitical value, with RT cast as the corrective voice that restores what a monopolised media landscape leaves untold.
no single actor should dominate the world, including the information world
